Abstract
The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) subtype H5N1 has had devastating consequences on both human health and domestic poultry production since its emergence in 1997 but has only significantly affected wild birds since 2006. Based on a seven-year surveillance program in Mongolia, this study examines the epidemiology of the virus in a purely wild bird system to assess the contribution of wild birds to the spread of HPAIV H5N1.
