Abstract
Small mammals in tundra ecosystems are difficult to study in winter and therefore it is tempting to utilize the remains of nests built by these species during the winter as an entrée into their seasonal ecology. This study investigates the accuracy of winter nest counts as an index of population density for tundra rodents, using lemmings across the Canadian Arctic as a model system.
