Abstract
Overstorey-understory canopy interactions, including the distribution of precipitation and light, are recognized as important determinants of community structure and dynamics in some temperate forests. As such, clearcutting can dramatically alter forest ecosystems, jeopardizing the viability of certain animal populations. This study assesses the associations between the bamboo stand characteristics preferred by pandas and a suite of environmental variables potentially influencing bamboo growth (slope, aspect, altitude, forest canopy structure, and species composition). Furthermore, it discusses the application of the results to panda conservation in south-western China.
