Abstract
The mongooses (Herpestidae) are one of the most species-rich and ecologically diverse families of the Carnivora. However, the ecology of rainforest species is poorly known. This paper documents the activity, movement, habitat use patterns and food habits of two poorly-known mongoose species in the Congo Basin: the long-nosed mongoose (Herpestes naso) and the marsh mongoose (Atilax paludinosus). Further, it analyses the degree of ecological separation between these two morphologically similar forest herpestids.
