Abstract
Riparian areas are disproportionately important to wildlife, particularly in provisioning water and productive vegetation. Loss of riparian habitat is cited as the primary factor for the declines in numerous landbird species in western North America, with losses of riparian habitat as high as 90% in some western states. While protocols have been developed to facilitate rapid assessment of riparian condition, they evaluate riparian vegetation in the context of function and provisioning for fish and aquatic invertebrates, not for landbirds and other terrestrial species. This study determines whether rapid riparian assessments provide an evaluation of potential bird habitat and provides recommendations for improving their utility.
