Abstract
The proposed De Beers diamond mine extension will have impacts on globally significant and highly dynamic peatland and aquatic ecosystems in the Hudson Bay Lowlands. We recommend the federal government and DeBeers consult with appropriate scientists about northern subarctic environments, specifically in terms of cumulative effects and climate change. We are concerned that the narrow scope of the project cannot protect the public interest in Ontario's Far North. We also provide recommendations, including establishing a regional strategic environmental assessment and requiring sustainability assessments, rather than focusing solely mitigating adverse effects.
