Abstract
Within nine months after a recovery strategy is prepared, Ontario's Endangered Species Act, 2007 (ESA), requires the MNRF to publish a statement summarizing the government’s intended actions and priorities in response to the recovery strategy. We express concerns about the process of creating the statement, its relatively weak nature, lack of necessary detail, and the limited extent to which the Ontario government commits to meaningful recovery actions. The statement was completed long after the finalization of the Recovery Strategy, in contradiction with the ESA timelines, and with minimal stakeholder consultation. We request changes to misleading phrases and terminology. We are also concerned with the use of Government-led rather than Government-supported actions, and a lack of wolverine monitoring, and suggest updating and implementing best management practices for incidental wolverine harvest as a high priority.
