Abstract
Within nine months after a recovery strategy is prepared, Ontario's Endangered Species Act, 2007 (ESA), requires the MNRF to publish a statement summarizing the government’s intended actions and priorities in response to the recovery strategy. We express concerns about the process used to create the polar bear Government Response Statement, its weak and vague recovery goal, and the limitations of Ontario's commitments under each focus area; essentially, Ontario commits nothing new and has pledged no meaningful funds to address the decline of polar bears in the province. We provide recommendations to address our major concerns.
