Abstract
We describe issues related to the implementation of Ontario's Far North Act, 2010 and discrepancies between the objectives of the Act and the results emerging from community-based land-use planning processes, and comments on the current policy proposal. We express concerns about the ability of the current processes to deliver protection and development outcomes mandated under the Act. We support a more comprehensive planning process to ensuring ecological and social sustainability for development in the Ring of Fire, and look forward to learning how planning area adjustments will be made given the process the Webequie First Nation are employing to support discussion and decision-making together. We encourage Webequie planning staff to explore other approaches to protection and having their efforts recognized by the IUCN categories for protection by local communities and/or Indigenous Peoples. We also suggest further clarification and changes to help improve environmental protections and clarify the planning process with development and resource exploitation.
