Abstract
We are supportive of the key recommendations of the Southern Lakes Wildlife Coordinating Committee (SLWCC). We echo support for a legislative, regulatory and policy regime that is relatively uniform across the land base, and is established on the best available science and high management standards. We provide suggestions including: specifying an institutional mechanism for continued cooperation and coordination of wildlife and habitat management among responsible governments; creating a conceptual framework within which conservation should advance, linking conservation goals to land use and management processes and practices; and extending monitoring to keystone, indicator, and other focal species. We note that while we agree with the goal, there is no need for the government to establish new administrative infrastructure to develop and implement education and outreach programs when existing staff and procedures can be used with specific direction from whatever institution perpetuates the SLWCC.
