Abstract
The authors give an overview of lemming monitoring and research activities, and assess recent trends in lemming abundance across the circumpolar Arctic. Monitoring at 49 sites since 2000, shows that 38 sites are still active with lemmings today. No evidence was found to indicate that lemming populations are decreasing in general, but a negative trend was found for low arctic populations where voles are also present. As the Arctic is changing, the authors recommend maintaining long-term monitoring programmes while harmonizing methods across sites.
