Abstract
The term ‘monitoring’ has been used to describe many types of activities. It can be defined as the process of gathering information about variables such as rate of loss of forest cover or quantity of wildlife poached per month within a system of interest, such as a protected area1. Monitoring information is used to characterize the status of the protected area at different points in time for the purpose of assessing the state and drawing inferences about changes in state over time (Yoccoz et al. 2001). A simple example of monitoring is the gauge on the dash of your vehicle that shows how much fuel is remaining in the fuel tank. In this case, the fuel is the variable that you are interested in monitoring to assess the status of your vehicle as you travel.
