Title
Identifying Priority Zones for a Protected Area Network in Afghanistan
Author(s)
Kanderian, N., C. Shank, M. Johnson and H. Rahmani
Abstract
To assist with the development of a National Protected Area System Plan for Afghanistan, WCS conducted a comprehensive analysis of the country's ecoregions, fauna and flora using available literature and data. Certain hotspots of potential biodiversity, termed "Areas of Interest" were identified and these were subsequently combined and analyzed to produce so-called "Priority Zones". As sites for immediate further research and possible protected area status in the future, these Priority Zones were incorporated into the government's Protected Area Plan that aims to reduce biodiversity loss in line with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) targets.
