Abstract
Thirty-six Asiatic black bears and thirty-two brown bears were captured and radiocollared at the Sikhote-Alin Reserve for the period of 1992-2001. The Aldrich foot-snares set on bait were more efficient than those on trails. Meat and fish were the most efficient baits. The capture rates were higher in years of poor hard mast crops (acorns and Pinus sibirica nuts). The highest capture rate for black bears was in Siberian stone pine forests in snares set on bait during years with low nut production. On average, it took 391 trap-nights to capture a single bear. The actual doses of compounds used for anesthesia (telazol: 5.41 +/- 2.22 mg/kg for black bear and 6.94 +/- 2.24 mg/kg for brown bear; ketamine (mixed with xylazine): 4.9 +/- 1.66 mg/kg for black bear and 9.43 +/- 5.25 mg/kg for brown bear; xylazine (mixed with ketamine) 1.79 +/- 0.77 mg/kg for black bear and 0.95 +/- 0.01 mg/kg for brown bear) did not differ from the recommended ones.
