Abstract
This paper presents a part of a pilot project, financed by the Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs (OSTC), which was conducted on the Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of Congo and includes the Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This area is difficult to access and no recent cartography covering the area exists. The aim of this project is to set up a production line for base maps of the area, which can be used for monitoring land use and vegetation changes. The possible applications of remote sensing data in the production of recent base maps are investigated The most recent Landsat ETM+ and Landsat TM images were used to cover the study area. The satellite image maps produced in this project were at a scale of 1 to 200 000. A new method was devised in this project through direct collaboration with the fieldwork in the GCP collection process.
