Abstract
Ecological monitoring is firmly established as an essential tool for the effective management of biodiversity (Strayer et al. 1986). Many papers and books describe the reasons why ecological monitoring is important and outline the principles for good monitoring (e.g. Lindenmayer and Likens 2010). In this chapter, we will look at the more controversial question of whether all effort should be put into that monitoring. We pay particular attention to long-term 'surveilance' monitoring, as this has been criticised in the literature as generally not delivering value for money (Nichols and Williams 2006).
