Abstract
Hippocamelus bisulcus (Molina, 1782) is a deer endemic to Chile and Argentina that was originally distributed in the region of the Andean-Patagonian forests and ecototonal areas with the steppe (Cabrera & Yepes, 1960). Towards the beginning of the 20th century its distribution was significantly reduced due to anthropic pressures (Díaz, 2000). Currently, the remaining populations are small and fragmented (Vila et al. 2006). For this reason, the huemul has been classified as "endangered" nationally and internationally (Glade, 1988; Díaz & Ojeda, 2000; IUCN, 2016).
