Abstract
The Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has recognized the need and importance of monitoring to assess global progress on meeting the 2020 Aichi Targets. Targets 11 and 12 make clear that the key to making protected areas more effective is improved management and monitoring of management interventions. To demonstrate that management interventions are effective, one needs to monitor the conservation interventions themselves (performance monitoring), the changes in the influence of threats (outcome monitoring), and the effect on conservation targets (impact monitoring). This chapter reviews the kinds of monitoring activities typically conducted in protected areas and how well the resulting data might be used for reporting against Aichi Targets 11 and 12. It then recommends an approach, monitoring using camera traps, which allows for cost-effective, consistent, and scalable monitoring of multiple taxa across space and time.
