Abstract
Madidi is one of the most important protected areas in Bolivia and the world because of its extraordinary biological richness, which is expressed in the diversity of ecosystems and species of flora and fauna. Madidi contains 3% of the world's vascular plants, approximately 3.5% of the world's vertebrates and almost 10% of the world's birds and butterflies, in less than 0.0037% of its surface. These astonishing numbers are explained by its altitudinal gradient of almost 6,000 meters in altitude (184-6,044 m), encompassing two of the most biodiverse regions in the world: the tropical Andes and the Amazon. In addition, the park has significant levels of endemism, including unique habitats such as the Apolo mountain savannas, the Apolo dry forest and the Pampas del Heath Amazonian savannas.
