Abstract
The Cauca guan (Penelope perspicax) is a bird endemic to the slopes of the Cauca River valley in Colombia, and is considered endangered. Habitat loss and hunting have been its main threats, which have led to the reduction and isolation of its populations. The objective of this study was to determine the population density in a locality in the Farallones de Cali and to develop occupancy models to evaluate factors that explain the habitat use of the species. We obtained a density of 9 ind.km-2 the lowest value of the available estimates for the species; in addition, we found a close relationship between the area of forest cover and habitat use of the species. The results indicate the need to conserve forest remnants and maintain connectivity, because although the species can use a wide variety of habitats, the probability of use increases in relation to the available areas of forest. We recommend increasing sampling efforts in this population nucleus, ensuring temporal and spatial variability, in order to have better information for management in this nucleus.
