Abstract
A database of freshwater fish observations in the Bolivian Amazon lowland was compiled, based upon data from national and international museums. The update species checklist includes 973 taxa. Most of them pertain to the Characiformes and Siluriformes orders. 759 taxa were identified at a valid species level and 214 at the genus level. Further taxonomic studies are necessary to improve biodiversity evaluation. Species richness was 347 in the Madre de Dios basin, 394 in the Beni basin, 602 in the lténez basin, and 694 in the Mamoré basin. Species richness was positively correlated with the area of the principal watershed. Taxonomic similarity analysis indicates that the Bolivian Amazon lowland could be divided into the Mamoré-lténez, Beni, and Madre de Dios faunistic groups. / This paper analyzes a database of fish records from the Bolivian Amazon lowland conserved in national and foreign museums. The updated specific list is composed of 973 taxa, mostly from the orders Characiformes and Siluriformes. 759 taxa are identified to species level, but 214 are recorded in museums at genus level, indicating the need for taxonomic work to improve biodiversity assessment. The specific richness of the large basins is related to their surface area, 347 and 394 in the Madre de Dios and Beni basins and 602 and 694 in the lténez and Mamoré basins, respectively. An analysis of the taxonomic similarity between basins indicates that the Bolivian Amazon could be considered as a juxtaposition of three faunal assemblages: 1) Mamoré-Lténez, 2) Beni and 3) Madre de Dios.
