Abstract
The Primate Specialist Group’s Section on Great Apes (SGA) is undertaking a review of the action planning process and the outcomes for great ape conservation. This group presentation will examine the great ape conservation Action Planning process, with the objective of suggesting improvements for future iterations. Such action plans are in place, or planned, for all great ape taxa; methods and approaches have varied slightly over time. An SGA working group has been created to review the existing action plans, and to create a formal, standardised process for both the evaluation of existing plans and the development of future plans, following the IUCN Guidelines. Some plans have not been formally evaluated, but for others, written reviews of their implementation and effectiveness have been completed and can serve as the model for a standard framework. Additionally, the presentation will review the coordination and implementation mechanisms used to ensure the plans achieve their desired outcomes. Finally, given advances in technology and connectivity, the group is considering improvements in organizing and communicating great ape conservation priorities.
